Clay Krieg is a potter based in Huntsville, AL. He received his BFA in ceramics from the University of North Alabama in 2015. Since graduation, he worked as an assistant production manager at a slip cast pottery company called Southern Growler. During this experience, he was introduced to slip cast pottery and using a 3-D printer to create printed prototypes. This sparked his passion for using molds to create unique functional pottery. He now continues his mold research and development while preparing for his first ceramic residency in the summer of 2019.
This two-day demonstration and hands-on workshop will show how to make and use plaster molds for slip cast, hand built, and thrown pottery. It will demonstrate practical examples of how the use of molds can aid in your creative studio practices.
The demonstration and discussion will include:
How slip casting works
How to mix plaster
The do’s and don’ts of creating or choosing a prototype
How to use molds with hand building and wheel throwing
How to make your own pottery stamp for decoration or signing your pots
How to repair molds
How to make a hump mold
How to make a press mold
How to make a two-part mold
Each student will take home:
A mold of their hand made stamp
Their own handmade press or slump mold
Their own handmade two-part coffee cup mold
